Always On, Still Accountable: Governing Financial Crime Controls That Change Themselves

Financial institutions today face a growing mismatch: risk evolves continuously, while compliance processes often operate in cycles. The result is a widening gap between emerging threats and an organisation's ability to respond.
It is not a lack of ambition. Recent research by SymphonyAI found that six in ten compliance leaders name AI and automation as their top investment priority, yet three quarters still review alerts manually or with only partial automation. Just 4.7% update their monitoring and controls continuously, and at seven in ten institutions, fewer than one in twenty investigated alerts lead to an escalation or a filing. The priority is clear. The controls have not caught up.
However, true continuous intelligence requires more than just new technology. As financial institutions look to deploy AI and shift from a reactive "police" mindset to a proactive, data-led "intelligence" organisation, they face significant hurdles in upgrading their people and processes.
Criminal groups have already moved from private banking into retail banking, but as that also becomes increasingly difficult to exploit, compliance teams need to anticipate where illicit funds may migrate to next, including capital markets, commodities markets, insurance and other complex or less familiar channels.
This session examines what continuous financial crime controls require in practice: how institutions can better connect external threats, regulatory change, and internal risk signals, and how to upskill compliance teams and rewrite procedures to manage an AI-augmented, always-on operating model.
